The Executive Primer on Hospital Environmental Sustainability is an American Hospital Association (AHA) leadership guide for hospital and health system leaders.
The vision of the AHA is a society of healthy communities where all individuals reach their highest potential for health. One of the many ways to achieve this vision is through actions that make our hospitals more sustainable – environmentally, financially and operationally.
The Executive Primer, in alignment with AHA’s Hospitals in Pursuit of Excellencestrategic platform, illustrates how hospital leaders can drive positive change and deliver multiple benefits through environmentally sustainable practices.
It describes opportunities for action in the areas of building and construction, chemicals, food, energy, materials management, water and waste. And, it includes information on incentives and policy considerations, tips for leading a sustainability initiative, and a checklist and self-assessment to help you get started or take the next steps on the journey.
The American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE), the Association for the Healthcare Environment (AHE), and the Association for Healthcare Resource and Materials Management (AHRMM) of the American Hospital Association have also produced a detailed Sustainability Roadmap for Hospitals. This operations guide for managers will provides tools, target objectives and best practices to help hospitals implement sustainable practices.
